THE CONNING TOWER: Record turnout expected, Olympians to ...

A record 1,043 athletes, which includes a total of nine Olympians and 30 world champions, are expected to compete this weekend when the 2013 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships converge on the Prince George?s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md., March 22-24.

Encompassing ages 30-95+, competitors from 47 states and 14 countries will prove their lifetime fitness in a complete range of track and field events. Competition begins at 8 a.m. each day. More information including a complete schedule and list of entries can be found here

Headlined by Ed Burke, the 1984 Team USA Olympic flag bearer, the nine Olympians competing in Landover took part in Olympic Games ranging from 1956 through 2012. A total of 30 age-group Masters World Indoor and World Outdoor champions will also compete.

Olympic athletes competing in Landover
Edward Burke (Los Gatos, Calif.) ? The Olympic flag bearer and hammer thrower for Team USA at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Burke will compete in the weight throw and superweight. He holds the world record for his age group in the weight throw.
Rob Muzzio (M45, Clifton, Va.) ? Muzzio placed fifth in the decathlon for Team USA at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He competes in Landover in the shot put and pole vault as a member of the Potomac Valley Track Club.
Elliott Denman (M75, West Long Branch, N.J.) ? A competitor in the 50km race walk at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, Denman will compete in the 3,000m race walk and the weight throw at the Masters Indoor Championships.
Jim Barrineau (M55, Burke, Va.) ? A veteran of masters track and field competition, Barrineau represented the U.S. along with Dwight Stones in the men?s high jump during the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. He will compete in that event in Landover.
Ann Marie Flynn (W75, Westport, Conn.) ? A member of Team USA at the 1956 Olympic Games in the high jump, Flynn will compete at the Masters Indoor Championships in the shot put, weight throw and superweight.
Chris Williams (M41, Colton, Calif.) ? Williams is a three-time Jamaican Olympian (2000, ?04, ?08) as a member of the 4x400m and will compete in Landover in the 60m and 200m.
Chris Faulknor (M50, Los Angeles, Calif.) ? A member of Jamaica?s 4x100m relay at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, Faulknor will run the 60m, 200m and 400m at the Masters Indoor Championships.
Karl Smith (M50, Alexandria, Va.) ? Smith will compete in the 60m, 200m and 400m in Landover after representing Jamaica at the 1984 Olympic Games in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay.
Bibiana Martina Olama Mangue (W30) ? Represented Equatorial Guinea at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the 100m hurdles and will compete in the 60m hurdles in Landover.

Award winners also competing
After garnering yearly prestigious awards in 2012, masters track and field legends Bob Lida (M76, Wichita, Kan.) and Jeanne Darpano (W76, Fayetteville, Ga.) will also be competing in Landover.

The 2012 IAAF World Masters Athletics Best Master of the Year award winner, Lida will be competing in both the 60m and 200m at the 2013 indoor championships. A dominant year in 2012, Lida set five age-group world records and six American records. He won three world indoor titles and six national titles.

The USA Track & Field Masters Athlete of the Year award winner, Daprano set a combined five world indoor and outdoor records in 2012 in the 400m, 800m and mile. She also set eight American age-group records, won two world titles and seven national titles. She is the only woman in history over the age of 70 to have broken seven minutes in the mile. She will compete in the 200m and the mile in Landover.

A two-time Sullivan Award finalist, which is annually given to America?s top amateur athlete with previous winners including Michael, Phelps, Lebron James and Tim Tebow, Phil Raschker (W66, Marietta, Ga.) is recovering from knee surgery, but will compete in the women?s pole vault.

A world champion middle distance runner, Nolan Shaheed (M63, Pasadena, Calif.) is a world class jazz musician, who has played lead trumpet for Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin among others. Shaheed will also be competing in Landover.

Kevin Castille (M40, Nicholasville, Ken.) established the American age-group outdoor record in the 5,000m (14:00.09) and 10,000m (28:57.88) in winning USATF Athlete of the Week honors in April of 2012. He will compete in the 3,000m in Landover.

Rob Muzzio (M45, Clifton, Va., shot put and pole vault); Bruce McBarnette (M55, Sterling, Va., high jump); Oscar Peyton (M60, Accokeek, Md., sprints); Alisa Harvey (W47, Manassas, Va., 400m and 800m); Jim Barrineau (M55, Burke, Va., high jump), Alby Williams (M70, Bethesda Md., sprints); James Barr (M45, Arlington Va., entered in eight events); Bob Paulen (M75-79, Silver Spring, Md., multiple events); Ty Brown (M65-69, 60m and 60m hurdles); Ken Moss (M65-69, Leesburg, Va., weight throw and superweight throw); Marcus Battle (M50-54, Silver Spring, Md., long jump and triple jump); Larry Rosen (M50-54, Bethesda, Md., shot put); Shawn Robinson (M50-54, Ellicott City, Md., weight throw and superweight throw).

Kathy Bergen (W70), two world records will be competing in the 60, 200m and high jump; Gloria Krug (W80), two American records will compete in the shot put, weight throw and superweight throw; Christel Donley (W75) will compete in the high jump, shot put, weight throw and pentathlon; Coreen Steinbach (W60) will compete in the 800m; Rita Hanscom (W55), holds one American record and will compete in the 60m and 200m; Debbie Lee (W55) will compete in the 400m, mile, 3,000m and triple jump; Carol Finsrud (W55), holder of six American records will compete in the shot put, weight throw and superweight throw; Lorraine Jasper (W50), will compete in the 800m and mile; Renee Henderson (W45) will compete in the 60m and 200m; Charmaine Roberts (W45) will compete in the 200m and 400m; Lisa Ryan (W40) will compete in the 60m, mile, 3,000m, long jump, triple jump, shot put, weight throw and superweight throw; Monica Kendall (W55), one American record and will compete in the shot put and weight throw; Jennifer Stephens (W40), one American record and will compete in the weight throw and superweight throw.

Men
Robert Paulen (M75) will compete in the high jump, long jump and triple jump; Gary Patton (M65) will compete in the 800m and mile; Bruce McBarnette (M55) will compete in the high jump and triple jump; Oscar Peyton (M60) will compete in the high jump and long jump; Robert Thomas (M45) will compete in the 200m; Antwon Dussett (M35) will compete in the 200m and 400m; David Bickel (M45), one American record and will compete in the shot put, weight throw and superweight throw.

There will also be battles for the overall team championship with over 70 teams entered and 17 teams with over ten entrants. The Potomac Valley Track Club has the most entries with 105.
